You-I-Porn (UI Porn)

There was a time in my life when I had this odd desire that I wanted to get into mock UI graphics for film and TV and then I found other things to do. My interest in this stuff has never completely gone away, though over the years it has gotten more and more insane and repetitive. Most of these fake UIs are rather formulaic with their luminous lines, white contours, dancing graphs and endless different counter style numbers and usually the screen is crammed to the brim with yet another dial. It’s a good thing that real UI design and info/ data graphics works differently. It’s also kinda funny in an ironic sense that back in the pre-HD era the limited screen resolution of the playback screens on the set (and the greater technical difficulties in producing the content in the first place) resulted in a more “realistic” or at least plausible design with a bit of restraint and functionality that could exist in the real world. So, to cut my long hubbub short, these days I’m rarely ever impressed by those screen graphics, but occasionally it still happens. Back then I very much liked the stuff in Tron Legacy and the same guy has now done some stuff for Oblivion. I have yet to see the ¬†film, so I can’t fully judge how it looks beyond what you see in the trailers and clips on the web and in a way it still follows the aforementioned formula, but, and that’s my point, it has this feel that it could actually exist. There’s room for the elements to stand out and when you imagine this to be displayed on this huge table or projected onto the spherical canopy of the bubble ship, even the numbers might actually be readable despite appearing a bit on the petit side. And that gentlemen was involved again as well. ;-)
